Topaz (aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide) is a very hard gemstone (Mohs Scale 8). White topaz is often mistaken for diamond, due to the similar clarity and colour. Because of this, white topaz can be used as a cheap alternative to diamond accents in gemstone jewellery.
